Scotland’s Christian Churches offer a vision for education

(To download a PDF copy of the report please click here or go to the publications page.)

•What vision of the human person underpins educational policy?
•What values should schools offer to young people today?
•What roles do parents, families and communities play in educating young people?
•How will Curriculum for Excellence provide young people with a sound foundation on which to base their moral and ethical decisions throughout life?

These questions and more are raised in ‘A Christian Vision for Education in Scottish Schools’ published today by the Scottish Churches’ Education Group, whose members are drawn from the nine Member Churches of ACTS.

This document - which is being distributed to MSPs; to Heads of Council Education Services; to Her Majesty’s Inspectorate; and to the congregations of ACTS’ Member Churches - sets out the general principles which the Christian Churches believe should underpin the education system in Scotland. It is offered as an expression of the abiding interest of all the Churches in education and is intended to raise issues of common interest to all Scots, irrespective of faith tradition or belief.

The document concludes with these words:

“The transmission of knowledge and skills; a love of learning, the arousing of a sense of wonder; a desire to explore, question, imagine and create; and developing a sense of justice: these are all at the heart of the learning enterprise, helping both teacher and learner to become fully human and fully alive.”
